Abstract

SUMMARY A theory of the psychological basis for the experience of God is presented which represents a dialectical resolution of the debate between theists and atheists. The present paper argues that the experience of God is essentially a form of projection and as such is an internal event that does not exist independent of an individual's psyche. Nevertheless, belief in God is thought to be a compelling and entirely natural phenomenon that human beings are innately inclined to experience. A distinction is made between faith in a particular beliefnamely, faith in the existence of a loving, omnipotent God-and an attitude of faith. It is suggested that belief in God, while not essential for an attitude of faith, can serve to foster such an attitude, which is, in turn, the basis for experiences of transcendence.
