Hoffa Professor of History and Vice Dean for Faculty at The George Washington University’s Columbian College of Arts and Sciences. He is the author of Brotherhoods of Color: Black Railroad Workers and the Struggle for Equality (Harvard University Press, 2001), Waterfront Workers of New Orleans: Race, Class, and Politics, 1863–1923 (Oxford University Press, 1991), and Black Protest and the Great Migration: A Brief History with Documents (Bedford/St. Martins, 2002) and the editor of the three-volume Encyclopedia of U.S. Labor and Working Class History (Routledge, 2006). The co-chair of the Washington History Seminar at the Woodrow Wilson Center, he is currently completing a biography of A. Philip Randolph.
