Abstract

In this work, the electrochemical properties of MmNi 3.55Co 0.75Mn 0.7− x Al x ( x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4) compounds for secondary battery application were studied. We found that Al substitution for Mn can lower the hydride formation pressure and reduce the hysteresis between the hydrogen absorption and desorption pressure. The substitution of a small quantity of Al for Mn increases the hydrogen storage capacity of the compound. However, the slope of the plateau region and the discharge electrode potential increase and the hydrogen storage capacity decreases with further increases in Al content. According to our experimental results, the best alloy composition in this system is MmNi 3.55Co 0.75Mn 0.6Al 0.1.
