Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to consider the theoretical research line around the collaboration between museums and schools. To do so, first, the role of museums as non-formal educational spaces will be established. Then, the state of the question will be presented concerning the most relevant studies carried out both in Spain and internationally (focusing particularly on the United States) regarding the study of the relationship between museums and schools from its origins to the new challenges of the 21st century. The main conclusions of these studies reflect a change in the educational methodology developed in schools, the renovation of the visitors' interaction with the museum, and the development of a new model of cultural consumption. The proposal for the future is to contribute towards the development of collaborative processes between schools and museums, and the reasons and recommendations for such collaboration are presented.
