Abstract

In this paper, the methods of Kansei Engineering are applied to quantize the product material texture image, and the mapping from product image to material texture is built. According to the model of product material texture image survey, we develop a Kansei engineering system based on Product Material Texture Image survey (PMTI system). Firstly, the representative samples and Kansei image semantics are extracted in the online survey. Then, the 2D image scale graph is formed by the data which are analyzed using the multidimensional scaling, clustering methodology and factor analysis. Finally, the database of product material texture image is set up, which could be the reference for designers. We take sports backpacks’ material texture (fabric material) as an example to study and apply the PMTI system, and successfully verify that this system contributes to the products’ design orientation, guides the process of product design and improves the overall cost-efiectiveness of product development.
