Abstract

The study of structure and morphology changes during thermal decomposition of yttrium oxalate decahydrate Y2(C2O4)3·10H2O was presented in this paper. Thermal decomposition was found to include two main stages: dehydration and oxalate thermolysis. The effect of different dehydration conditions at hexahydrate formation stage on its structure and morphology was studied. Two polymorphic hexahydrate phases are shown to form. Structural transformations during dehydration were assumed to proceed by martensitic mechanism in both cases. Structural transformation mechanisms were suggested. The stages of oxalate thermolysis were determined and products at each stage were identified. Yttrium oxide as final product of decomposition was obtained.
