Abstract

The French child is introduced to geology, as part of his required courses in geography, upon entrance to secondary or normal school. Geology is a compulsory course for anyone desiring to major in any science at the undergraduate level. Earth sciences are given an important place in higher education. A graduate degree in geology qualifies a person to teach any natural science in high schools; these degrees are quite varied and include special diplomas, master's degrees, and doctorates.Practically all geological subjects are offered in French universities. Many other institutions of higher education—especially engineering schools—offer, or even require, several geology courses.Employment opportunities for geologists are broader in France than in many European countries; several avenues are open besides teaching and research. Military, naval, and government jobs are available; industry, business, and museums welcome members of the profession; and petroleum concerns offer excellent positions to graduates.
