Highlights

  • The student experience of the 31st UKSG Conference held in Torquay, compiled from reports submitted by Erin Ferguson (University of Strathclyde), Emma Anderson (Oxford Brookes University), Maria Tourna (Aberystwyth University), Stephanie Jardine (Liverpool John Moores University) and Winnie Tam (University of Sheffield)

  • Very privileged to have been chosen as the first publishing student ever to be awarded a sponsored place, I was determined to keep climbing that steep learning curve I began at Oxford Brookes almost 18 months ago when I embarked on the Publishing and Language course there

  • Monday’s plenary sessions kicked off with a fascinating presentation by James Gray (Ingram Digital Group) on the digital supply chain. He provided us with an outline of the differing outputs from large warehouses for book distribution, ondemand printing and Lightning Source, illustrating Ingram’s distribution structure which enables a book to be ordered, printed and shipped within 24 hours

Summary

General comments

I enjoyed the conference very much. The experience was invaluable. As the conference was about library or publisher, but the whole information industry, it gave me a much wider view of the industry. [Winnie] Having been chosen as one of the six students to attend the conference was a great honor for me, and I felt really privileged. Attending a conference of more than 700 delegates from all related fields gave me the unique opportunity to share thoughts, exchange ideas but most importantly to enrich my knowledge regarding new technologies, and receive more information about recent developments in the serials industry and the digital world in general. I arrived in Torquay somewhat nervous as I am a postgraduate student in Information and Library Studies and do not have any experience of attending a conference of this magnitude. I need not have worried; registration went smoothly and the friendly attitudes of the conference organizers and other delegates helped me to soon feel at ease. [Erin]
