Abstract

Abstract In one of the most important documents to come out of Eastern Europe in the past decade, The Report of the State of the Republic and Ways to Rectify It, the malfunctioning of the mass media in Poland is recognized as a major source of tensions. The mass media's lack of credibility is linked with the leaders' lack of credibility, and a reflection of the overall malfunctioning of the system as such. Because of frequent changes in the style of propaganda and censorship practices, staffing the media with mediocre personnel for political reasons, and generally treating the media as an instrument of manipulation, public opinion in Poland does not have access to the state-controlled media. Thus, the Poles treat news with habitual skepticism.
