‘Ten years ago,’ the Coventry Standard editoria1ized in March, 1870, ‘the liberals of a certain school of politics inflicted the death blow to our two staple trades, and affected the most terrible “depreciation of our city” with which it was ever visited … [T] hat depreciation has melted millions of capital previously profitably and usefully employed, … it has ruined or impoverished hundreds of manufacturers and trades people, and reduced thousands of the industrious classes to the brink of starvation.’
