Abstract

The H109-alpha, He109-alpha, C109-alpha, He137-beta, and C137-beta lines toward Orion A have been mapped with an angular resolution of 2.6 arcmin. C85-alpha spectra at three positions have also been taken, with a resolution of 2.8 arcmin. The C109-alpha data reveal that there are three distinct regions of ionized carbon characterized by radial velocities of 6, 8.5, and 11 km/s. The 6- and 11-km/s regions appear to be localized near the optical dark bay. The 8.5-km/s component peaks to the northeast of the radio continuum peak. A structural model of the carbon region is proposed to explain the three components. Theoretical interpretation of C109-alpha, C137-beta, and C85-alpha lines from the partially ionized gas between Orion A and M42 indicates that the electron density is in the range from 10 to 20 per cu cm at one position in the ionized carbon region. The electron temperature cannot be determined. A feature detected at several positions is identified with elements heavier than carbon. Narrow hydrogen recombination line emission was detected along the northeastern edge of the nebula.
