Abstract
The Pugwash evaporite body, which lies within zone B of the Mississippian Windsor group, was discovered in 1953, and has been mined for salt since 1959. At Pugwash the Windsor forms an elliptically shaped inlier within an anticline in Pennsylvanian Pictou group sediments.Parts of two cycles of deposition have been identified within the deposit; four easily differentiated salt beds have been mapped and placed in a tentative stratigraphic column.The deposit has been severely deformed into a series of tight folds, the axial planes of which have an orientation similar to that of the anticline in the overlying Pictou sediments. It is suggested that the folding and thickening of the deposit may have been the result of the folding of the Pictou.
