Abstract

The liquid crystalline optical isotropic viscous phase occurring in some sodium di-2-ethylhexyl sulfosuccinate (Aerosol OT)-water systems is demonstrated to possess a body centered structure. The structure belongs presumably to the space group Ia3d, No. 230 in the International system, and would be composed of two interwoven but otherwise independent networks of polar short rod-like aggregates which are joined three and three at each end. The available space between the rod aggregates is filled by the hydrocarbon chains.
