Abstract

At the beginning of the Institutiones, Cassiodorus sets out a pattern for the ideal set of biblical codices, both of the sacred texts themselves and for an organised set of commentaries upon those texts. This article demonstrates that this pattern is one that Cassiodorus adopted from the list of canonical books which he found in Augustine’s De doctrina christiana 2,8,13. Moreover, it is this arrangement of codices that can be seen in the armarium in the Ezra / Cassiodorus picture in the opening pages of the Codex Amiatinus.
