Abstract

The acidic polysaccharide secreted by Rhizobium phaseoli strain 127 K36 was found to have a repeating unit of eight glycosyl residues and to contain two pyruvic acetal groups. Each of the glycosyl residues of the polysaccharide was determined to be in the d configuration and in the pyranoid ring-form. This repeating unit is, with the possible exception of base-labile substituents, identical with those found previously for the polysaccharides secreted by two strains of Rhizobium trifolii and two strains of Rhizobium leguminosarum, but different from the repeating unit of the polysaccharide secreted by Rhizobium phaseoli 127 K38. The octasaccharide repeating-unit of the Rhizobium phaseoli 127 K36 polysaccharide is shown on page 142.
