Abstract

Western scholars have analyzed intensively the specific tenets of Soviet military doctrine. In order to interpret properly these tenets, one must first understand the function or r?le of military doctrine within the hierarchical framework of Soviet military thought. The first recognition that this is a legitimate subject of inquiry is in Dr. Uwe Nerlich's intro duction to the German edition of Voyennaya Strategiya.1 Dr. Nerlich explains the interrelationships of the component parts of this hierarchy by the diagram given in Figure 1.
