Abstract

The authors report XPS spectra of crystalline PbSiO 3 and Pb 2SiO 4, and of several lead-silicate glasses containing 30–70 mol% PbO. The fraction of silicon-bridging oxygen atoms was determined from these spectra. In high-lead-silicate glasses an important fraction of the oxygen atoms is bridging, indicating the presence of highly polymerized silicate anions.
