Abstract

Synopsis It is shown that plastic sulfur, at least in the extended state of fibrous φ-sulfur, is made up from two constituents in roughly equal portions, one fibrous and one with smaller molecules. The last constituent is found to be the γ-sulfur of Muthmann. The recrystallization of both constituents to α is studied. It is found that γ recrystallizes to α ′, a name here given to α -needles along the [101] direction.
