Abstract

The structure of CO 2 monolayers adsorbed onto MgO(100) single crystal surfaces has been studied by LEED experiments within the 35–100 K temperature range. The surface was prepared by cleaving the crystal in situ under ultrahigh vacuum conditions. The monolayer presents an ordered commensurate structure (2√2 × √2)R45°. We propose a unit cell containing two molecules and having two glide planes.
