Abstract

The recent advances in the understanding of the two nuclei 12C and 16O are discussed in the light of recent measurements and developments in nuclear theory. The focus is the collective excitations, which may be related to dynamical symmetries which in turn reveal the nature of the underlying nuclear structure.
