Abstract

The thallus of Chlorodesmis bulbosa (Womersley) comb. nov. varies from a single branched filament in the juvenile form to adult brush-like plants composed of many filaments which are massed into a bulbous stipe at the base and are distally free. The filaments are siphonous, heteroplastic, uncalcified, and dichotomously branched.Fertile plants bear dichotomously branched heads of compound reproductive organs, each consisting of fertile branches arranged on a central siphon. The central siphon acts as a passage for the zooids before they are discharged through an apical pore. Only one kind of biflagellate zooid has been observed. They are believed to be gametes, but conjugation has not been seen. Similarities between the reproductive structures of Chlorodesmis and Halimeda and the affinity of these two genera to Caulerpa are discussed.
