Abstract

The ultrastructure ofthe nucleus-associated organelle (NAO) is described in Basidiobolus haptosporus and B. magnus. NAO morphology is the same in both species. Each NAO is composed of a cylinder of 11-12 singlet microtubules embedded in an osmiophilic matrix. A small satellite is usually associated with each NAO. Interphase cells possess two NAOs, replication apparently occurring during mitosis. The morphology of the Basidiobolus NAO is unusual since no other non-flagellated organism contains microtubules as structural com? ponents of their NAO, and all microtubule-containing NAOs (centrioles) show 9-fold symmetry.
