Abstract

This study examined the relationship between perfectionism, stress, and competitive anxiety. The participants were 319 Taekwondo student-athletes (male=290, female=29, Mage=18.24). The data was analysed by conducting descriptive statistics, correlation, and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The result of this study are as follows. First, self-oriented perfectionism has a negative effect on stress, while other-oriented perfectionism positively influences on stress. Second, self-oriented perfectionism effects on self-confidence positively. other-oriented perfectionism, meanwhile, has a negative effect on self-confidence and positive effect on cognitive anxiety and somatic anxiety. Third, stress positively effects on cognitive anxiety, somatic anxiety, and self-confidence. To conclude, this study verified the relationship of perfectionism, stress, and competitive anxiety to improve high school Taekwondo athlete’s performance. Therefore, self-oriented perfectionism is determinant to control stress and anxiety of athletes.
