Abstract
The paper describes the state-of-the-art of the development of a structural design method for asphalt pavements based on the use of theoretical concepts and traditional design procedures. It is considered that the development of a structural design method based on fundamental concepts is necessary to deal with the challenges of the future in terms of increased numbers and magnitudes of wheel loads and the introduction of new or modified paving materials. In addition, pavement failures, which occur more frequently than is generally admitted, can be better explained with a proper appreciation of fundamentals. /TRRL/
