Abstract

Synopsis The occurrence of sillimanite in the Moine schists and gneisses of Ardgour (Argyll) and Moidart (Inverness-shire) is discussed. The relationship of sillimanite in pods (faserkiesel) to planar and linear structural elements leads to the conclusion that the sillimanite-grade metamorphism began prior to the second regional fold episode. This is in keeping with evidence that the regional migmatisation in the southwestern part of the Moines preceded in part the main movements of the second fold episode.
