Abstract
We point out that the anomalous U(1)'s arising frequently in nonstandard embeddings of orbifold compactification is the needed Peccei-Quinn symmetry which can be broken at the intermediate scale. We show this in an orbifold model with the minimal gauge group SU(3)⊗SU(2)⊗U(1) n .
