Abstract

Considered in this paper is the torsional problem for a circular cylinder containing an equilateral triangle opening and a line crack. The torsion solution is obtained by using the method of singular integral equations and the crack-cutting technique, the advantage of which lies in the preserving of the stress singularities at the interior corners of the hole as well as those at the crack tips. Mode III stress intensity factors are computed at both ends of the crack. Recognizing that the singular behavior of the stresses near a notch-tip differs from that of the crack-tip, the intensities of the local stresses at the corners of the hole are given.
