Abstract

The taxonomic status of strains belonging to the Streptomyces violaceusniger phenotypic cluster, including eight S. violaceusniger strains, three Streptomyces hygroscopicus strains, and the type strains of Streptomyces sparsogenes and Streptomyces melanosporofaciens, was evaluated by using DNA relatedness data. The S. violaceusniger strains were separated into seven different DNA homology groups, including four single-member clusters, at a level of DNA relatedness of >70%. S. hygroscopicus NRRL 2387T (T = type strain) clustered with the type strain of Streptomyces endus and several S. violaceusniger strains. The other strains of S. hygroscopicus, S. sparsogenes, and S. melanosporofaciens formed single-member homology groups.
