Abstract

Spray forming 7055 alloy has been successfully welded by FSW under water mist cooling condition. The joint under water mist cooling condition is defect-free with tensile strength of 488 MPa while that under the air cooling condition is only 407 MPa. The microstructure of joints was observed by OM and SEM. DSC, XRD and TEM were applied to do further study on the strengthening phases. The results show that water mist cooling method has improved the thermal cycle of welding and more η phase and S phase are reserved in both heat affected zone and nugget zone, which keep a coherent or semi-coherent relationship with the matrix. Therefore, water mist cooling method has the second phase strengthening effect on the joint, which improves the performance of the joint.
