ABSTRACT“The Strawman” is a short story employing archetypal imagery and an understanding of psychoanalytic theory that explores the relationship between a lonely young woman and her partner; a man made of straw. Reader’s comments provide evidence that although the imagery is interpretable, the emotional content of the piece has elements of universality and may induce experiences of empathy, compassion, or identification within the reader.
