Abstract

In this paper, the management of uncertainty is discussed from the point of view of decision making in planning. The particular combination of concepts and techniques described here has become known as the Strategic Choice Approach. The first section summarizes the main features of the Approach. These are elaborated in the main section of the paper which traces the evolution of Strategic Choice and explains its philosphical orientation; the role of technical decision-making aids in strategic choice; and the lessons learned through its application to practical planning problems. The main section closes with a review of issues in the further development of Strategic Choice. The third and fourth sections describe in more detail the technical decision-making aids most commonly used in the Strategic Choice Approach.
