Abstract

The author dreamed this story, and then, evening after evening over a summer vacation in Colorado, she told it to her grandchildren. Soon adults were listening and urging her to write it down. And here it is, the story of Two Toes, a Ute Indian boy who goes out on his name quest into the La Plata Mountains of Southwest Colorado, followed and then accompanied by his adopted wolf pup, Muff. Lost to his people for a number of years, Two Toes joins up with Muff's former family, the Bear Creek Wolf Pack, and melds into this animal world. His return to his own people is a transition full of danger and tests, but in the end there is a blending of animal, soul, and spirit, and Two Toes earns the most powerful name ever given by the tribe's shaman.
