Abstract

The Storytelling Project: Teaching about Racism and Tolerance through Storytelling and the Arts (STP) at Barnard College links research to practice through the development of a curriculum to teach about race, racism, and social justice through storytelling and the arts. A creative team of artists, public school teachers, university faculty, and college students developed a storytelling model and curriculum to teach middle and high school students about race, racism, and social justice in two urban classrooms. In narrative form, this paper describes the project, its background, and philosophy. It also ties the interplay of storytelling and social justice to the rhetoric of President Barack Obama.
