Abstract
This chapter examines the broader literature on global sustainable urbanism and the geography of urban sustainability, and discusses how and why urban sustainability projects tend to manifest divergences and convergences. It offers an overview of sustainable urban projects in Asia with a focus on new cities developed under the 'eco-city' banner. The chapter also examines the commonalities linking eco-city projects across the Asian continent and the contextual elements that make them unique. It narrows down the scale of the inquiry, moving the discussion to Hong Kong, and showing how a single region manifests the same global/local tensions observable among Asian states. The chapter assesses the nature of sustainable urbanism in Asia, explaining what factors are penalizing the urbanisation of the continent and indicating a possible alternative path. It shows how, in Asia, the development of sustainable urban projects is a complex and variegated phenomenon shaped by a combination of global and local factors.
