Abstract

In the normal cochlea only fibers that are tuned to low frequencies show phase-following responses due to the low-pass filter mechanisms situated at the level of inner hair cell and synapse. As a result, 10 fibers With low characteristic frequency (CF) click-evoked post-stimulus time histograms (PSTHs) show a periodicity associated with CF (Kiang et al., 1965), while in high-CF fibers the PSTH reflects only the envelope of the filter’s impulse response. For high click intensities, the symmetry of PSTHs to rarefaction clicks and condensation clicks (RC and CC) 10 hlgh-CF fibers can be lost (Antoli-Candela and Kiang, 1978). There, a phase-followinglike character seems to emerge at click intensities for which the spectral level of the click reaches above the low-frequency tail of the frequency threshold curve (FTC). Such phenomena must be expected to be even more prominent in cases of cochlear pathology where the sensitivity of the tail of the FTC has increased (Liberman and Dodds, 1984; Harrison and Prijs, 1984; Versnel et al., 1989).
