Abstract

A case of severe fluctuating muscular rigidity and myoclonic spasms, an example of the stiffman syndrome in association with hyperthyroidism is described. Treatment of the hyperthyroidism was followed by a decrease in the marked generalized muscular rigidity and spasms, but moderate hypertonicity persisted. Extensive studies did not reveal the specific nature of the neuromuscular disturbance but were consistent with a central nervous system origin.
