Abstract

The stereoregularity of poly(vinyl chloride) obtained by suspension polymerization, using a temperature program in order to obtain a constant polymerization rate, has been determined by NMR spectroscopy and compared with samples of polymer made at constant temperatures of 45. 52 and 60°; all other polymerization conditions were identical. The data, confirmed by values found from the temperature dependence of the intensity ratio of absorption bands in i.r. at 1434 and 1428 cm −1, and by X-ray diffraction, have been interpreted using dispersional analysis. Poly(vinyl chloride) obtained by polymerization using the temperature program has practically the same degree of syndiotacticity and crystallinity, as polymer made at constant temperature in the range used in the temperature programme.
