Abstract
The ‘stele of the Marathonomachoi’ was found in 1999 in Herodes Atticus’ villa at Eua-Loukou, in the eastern Peloponnese. Dated on palaeographical grounds to the time of the Persian wars and attributed to the tomb of the Marathonomachoi on the battlefield, it has been alternatively dated shortly after 490, or during the ’70s. Developing some arguments which I have already discussed in previous articles, I here explore the possibility that the stele was originally inscribed with the casualty list of the Erechtheid tribe, while the epigram was added some time after 480-479. The stele would therefore represent two different phases of the historical memory of the Marathon battle.

È noto da Tucidide (2.34.5) che gli Ateniesi caduti a Maratona, quantificati da Erodoto nel numero di 192,1 vennero sepolti sul campo di battaglia. Che il tumulo di Maratona, a ridosso del 490, fosse corredato da un monumento funerario costituito da dieci stele con gli elenchi dei caduti divisi per tribù, come attestato da Pausania, è in genere dato per scontato. Per tentare di venire a capo del problema, oltre che esaminare la stele da un punto di vista tecnico-epigrafico e testuale, occorre sia collocarsi nella prospettiva degli usi attestati e delle trasformazioni intervenute a cavallo tra l’età arcaica e quella classica nella sepoltura dei caduti ateniesi, sia mettere a fuoco l’orizzonte di significati in cui si collocava il ricordo di Maratona nel 490, e dopo il 480-479, nella memoria civica ateniese
