Abstract
Italy dominates the raw silk market of Europe to about the same degree as the Far East does that of the world as a whole. The proportion in each case is about 90 per cent. Of the total world output of 7S,000 to 100,000 metric tons of raw silk, the Italian contribution of 4,000 to 5,000 metric tons, or about 5 per cent, is of small consequence. Sericulture is one of the oldest Italian industries, the breeding of silk worms having been introduced into Sicily in the early years
