Abstract
Heilongjiang Province has large areas of wetlands. 32 species ofanatidae were recorded: 5 geese (Anser sp.), 2 swans (Cygnus sp.) and 25 ducks (Anas sp.). Some millions of geese and duck bred here before the 1960s. Because of wetland reclamation for farmland in recent years, their numbers have declined rapidly, and five species: whooper swan (Cygnus cygnus), whistling wans (Cygnus columbianus), white-fronted goose (Anser erythropus), mandarin duck (Aix galericulata), and Chinese merganser (Mergus squamatus) are endangered. They are now protected by the China Wildlife Protection Law, promulgated in 1989. In order to protect wildlife resources, 19 natural reserves were set up in Heilongjiang Province; some species can be restored and utilized reasonably.
