Abstract

Soil-structure interaction effects for cooling towers during stationary and non-stationary earthquake excitation are studied. A new translation matrix method is applied to modify El-Shafee's method. Three ground motion cases are considered as representative of a stationary random process. The time intensity of the non-stationary random process is expanded into Fourier series. The effect of coupled mode coordinates induced by the soil medium damping and radiate damping is studied by using the fractional expansion method. Some numerical results of practical significance are given.
