Abstract

The mechanical properties of cement-based materials (CBMs) largely depend on their microstructures. For understanding the engineering performances of CBMs, it is essential to characterize the material structures and mechanical properties at micro- and nano-scales. Scratch tests have shown promising potentials in uncovering the micro/nano-mechanical and fractural information of various materials, including construction and building materials. This paper provides an overview on scratch technique applied to characterize the micro/nano-structure and mechanical properties of CBMs with profound discussions. The main results of this review are expected to provide useful guidelines for further academic and engineering applications of scratch test.
