Abstract

Well, maybe. As I write this from Birmingham, the British city where I live and work, Judith Thompson’s My Pyramids! Or: How I Got Fired from the Dairy Queen and Ended Up in Abu Ghraib, by Pvt. Lynndie England is playing at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The production, by Toronto’s Volcano Theatre, has received strong reviews in the British press. This even-handed treatment in the national newspapers makes a welcome change from the way that Canadian theatre is often covered here, when it is covered at all — more commonly, the British media treat Canadian theatre with a mixture of condescension, derision and, very rarely, rapturous embrace (usually when Ronnie Burkett comes to town).
