Abstract

A “Town Meeting on Complementary and Alternative Medicine” was held in Tucson, Arizona, on March 6, 2001. The meeting was sponsored by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Andrew Weil, M.D., creator and director of the Program in Integ r a t i v e M ed i c i n e , U n i v e r s i t y o f Arizona, Tucson, chaired the meeting. NCCAM director Stephen Strauss, M.D., and a panel of researchers discussed alternative and complementary (ACM) therapies for women’s health, asthma, and arthritis as well as the use of herbal medicines. The panelists also presented results of their recent research efforts, described some studies that are sti ll underway, and outlined future trends in ACM. Highlights of the Town Meeting are presented below.
