Abstract

The behaviour of plate girders has been extensively studied during the past few decades. Extensive lab work, analytical methods, and numerical analyses, have been used in order to: understand the behaviour of plate girders, come out with new design methods for the primary design purpose, time consuming, and the economical purpose. This review paper, summarizes numerous researches on straight steel and steel–concrete composite plate girders with emphasis on experimental, theoretical, and numerical work. Classification of straight plate girders based on the web panel status (stiffened webs, corrugated webs, and webs containing openings), type of applied load (shear, patch, fatigue, bending moment, or a combination of them), and tapered plate girders has been reviewed. Finally, all the collected data have been remarked and reported in a comprehensive format listing shape of section, parameters studied, and remark of the work has been done by each researcher.
