Abstract

For American art history, Erwin Panofsky's Early Neth-erlandish Painting (1953) ushered in the period of serious scholarly study of Northern art of the Renaissance era. In this book, appearing a decade after his essential mono-graph, The Life and Art of Albrecht Durer, was published (1943), Panofsky established the transalpine world of Ger-man and Netherlandish art as a legitimate field of study.
