Abstract
ABSTRACT A confidential postal questionnaire of members of the Political Science Association of South Africa (PSASA) was undertaken in February 1990 and a response rate of 40% obtained. The results have been analyzed to assess the strengths and weaknesses of political science in South Africa. It is shown that the discipline is now firmly established in South Africa and that the profession has a clear commitment to a democratic non‐racial future. There is, however, a lack of blacks and women among practitioners and societal and disciplinary constraints inhibit the development of substantive work. The way forward requires greater vigour on the part of the PSASA and a higher level of conceptualization and theoretical development.
