Abstract
Methods of starting hot-cathode fluorescent lamps may conveniently be divided into three categories, which together cover most, if not all, of the common starting devices. The paper discusses the processes occurring and the factors which affect the ease of starting when a lamp is started by means typical of each of these basic methods. Data are given which show how starting is affected by lamp parameters and conditions external to the lamp. The choice of starting method is briefly discussed with reference to the limitations of the more common types.
