Abstract

THE COMPARATIVE STUDY OP SEX ROLES and the place of women in society has in recent years given increasing prominence to myth, ritual, and cosmology. Male-dominated symbolic forms have been variously analyzed as charters or justifications for the subjugation of women, as testimony to male fears and ambivalence, as strategic resources in skirmishing between the sexes, or even as the means of male domination.1 Female participation in or control of ritual and symbolism have been taken as the sound of the otherwise muted voices of women, as compensation for their marginal position in many societies, or as the means by which to organize female solidarity and resistance.2
