Abstract

The standard Gibbs free energy of formation of the ternary compounds Nd 1.1Fe 4B 4 and Nd 2Fe 14B was determined at 1000–1100 K by means of e.m.f. measurement of galvanic cells using a single-crystal CaF 2 solid electrolyte. The results are expressed as ΔG o Nd .1.1 Fe 4 B 4 = −825.1 + 3.68 × 10 −1 T kJ mol −1 and ΔG o Nd 2 Fe 14 B = −806.7 + 5.85 × 10 −1 T kJ mol −1 Based on these data the equilibrium phase relations in the Nd 1.1Fe 4B 4-Nd 2Fe 14B-Fe 2B-Fe region were briefly discussed.
